I have been meaning to either buy or make a flatware holder wrap for a few years now and just never got around to it. One of the many things on my endless lists of things to do.
I have been struggling with how to transport flatware (knives, forks, spoons, tongs, bottle openers, etc.) on and off the boat. Especially when we are hosting a dinner for a number of people then it requires me to pack an endless supply of flatware for appetizers, main course, desserts, etc. I do try and have as much finger food as possible but it seems like we are always using the BBQ on the boat therefore utensils are required. I have tried packing the utensils in plastic bags or paper bags or in the cooler. I also need a place to put used utensils to transport home with us to put in the dishwasher. Plastic bags work fine except for knives. Not a good idea. Seems like any idea I came up with just didn’t work.
We were preparing to have more guests for a 4th of July party and I thought this is the time. I should really make a utensil wrap. As I was doing dishes and pondering what to make it out of I saw our dish drying mat. You know the kind made out of microfibre and padded such as you see for sale at Bed, Bath, and Beyond or other kitchen stores. I quickly ran to the store and the only one I could find that wasn’t as boring as a grey or brown solid color was a red polka dot mat. OK, I’ll buy it.
The nice thing about these mats is that they already folded into thirds. So all you need to do is fold one part of it and sew the edges and you are done. Takes about 1 minute. Then you can either tie a string, ribbon, a piece of cloth, whatever, around it and you are done. Or you can sew on a snap or some velcro or do nothing at all and just let it close naturally.
That’s it. A flatware holder wrap made in less than 5 minutes. Pretty handy especially if you already have a dish mat sitting around the house.
It works quite well due to the padding. I put 2 ziploc bags inside of it, one for clean utensils and another for dirty utensils.
I feel a bit more organized and not always having to worry about grabbing a bag out of the cooler or tote bag and getting stabbed by a knife. Crisis averted!
